Taking care of your own wellbeing

I know what you’re thinking. Self improvement can be expensive! For many years I wouldn’t have thought twice about spending money on my hair, clothes or makeup, but I’d flat out refuse to spend money on helping to heal my body or mind. I think part of the challenge is that in the UK we expect to be cared for, for free, with our wonderful NHS being there when we need it.

The problem with that is our mental health and general wellbeing isn’t really covered in that deal – in my experience most people don’t make it to the Doctors unless they have already hit breaking point, and support is scarce. So what can we do to avoid getting stuck in the system while everything falls down around us?

If you own a car, each year you take your car for an MOT and service – we do this to maintain the car and make sure that it’s road worthy, hopefully avoiding a break down when we least expect it.

Why not give yourself an MOT? Which parts of your life have stopped working or need a tune up? You can get the support you need now, that will set things right and make you feel like a new model

One great way to do this is to create a scoring system to see how satisfied you feel with various areas of your life. I’ve made an example for you below, however you can use any categories that feel relevant to your life.

Use a radar graph to plot the important elements of your life

Make a conscious decision about where you’d like to score for each of these elements (maybe plot that on the graph too for comparison), and then select one area to work on.

Laura’s top tip: Don’t bite off more than you can chew at this stage! Pick an area where you feel like you can set some easy goals to get you started, and get the momentum going.

If there are several elements of your life that you need to work on, don’t worry – that’s not uncommon. Avoid worrying about how bad the picture looks now, and instead focus on the small steps that will move you forward. If you need any help, give me a call.
